The New Forest National Park

A holiday in the New Forest is highly recommended. The UK is blessed with national parks, each different in character from the others. The New Forest arguably has the finest broad leaved woodland anywhere. It is maintained by the Forestry Commission and managed for everyone's leisure and pleasure.

Way-marked trails run through the woodlands providing hours of simple enjoyment and exercise. One frequently meets dog walkers, out for a morning stroll. There is such a good variety of trees and conifers that make each walk interesting. The ponies are everywhere as you wander, they take little notice of people and continue with the serious business of grazing and filling their bellies. Shy deer can also be spotted on occasion.

For walkers and outdoor people, the New Forest is an all year activity centre. Real walkers go whatever the weather!

Find somewhere to stay, perhaps in cottages near the New Forest National Park on the south coast of England.

Early bright fresh leaves fill us with hope each year. Wildlife is easier to spot during the spring because of the lack of cover. Birds are busy with nests and feeding their chicks. Late April and May brings a blue haze of bluebells to the forest floor.

The New Forest in the summer

Those long summer days are perfect for picnics and lazing around. Hatchet Pond and various other locations have a good car park and picnic tables. Take the children for a nature walk, try to spot lizards, snakes, butterflies and beetles.

The New Forest during autumn

Spot mushroom foragers scouring the meadows for fungi. Watch the red and gold leaves gently fall in the autumn, walk through a carpet of crisp leaves underfoot. Talks on foraging and recognising edible fungi take place at various venues. Children can try their hand at pumpkin carving in late October.

Winter in the New Forest

The south coast may be warmer than many other regions of England but snow still falls leaving the landscape white and beautiful. Although you might wish to go armed with gifts of carrots and pony nuts to feed the wild ponies in the winter, visitors are dissuaded from doing so.

Getting around the New Forest using the Open Top Tour Bus

The New Forest Tour Bus allows visitors to hop in and off at various point in the New Forest. Bicycles are also welcome aboard which is helpful for cyclists who wish to cycle a different stretch of road each day. This could be most convenient if you are staying in accommodation in the New Forest, especially if your cottage or lodge is on the bus route.

Country breaks all year round in the New Forest

The New Forest is one of the most beautiful and hospitable national parks in the UK. Because it is so compact and everwhere so well sign-posted, it is virtually impossible to get lost for long.
